“In my show at Nahmad Contemporary there is a series of six works called the ‘Suicide Paintings.’ Only after doing the first one do I recall Brice Marden’s ‘Suicide’ drawings which I saw frequently in the mid 1970s.
Something strange happened—I don’t know if it is good or bad. I never really knew what people read into my paintings, but over the past ten years I have been surprised by many very personal responses, not least about the sexuality in my paintings. This seemed correct, I am a sexual guy who loves to dance R & B and being with women.
‘Suicide Paintings’ seem depressing and unexpected. I wonder if the series will go on or only emerge when I have done too many paintings at a time, worked too hard. Being tired is no excuse, I think it’s about the pace, too fast.
