I told you that the true title of A Child is Being Beaten is ac-tually, “I know nothing more about it—a child is being beat-en (battu).” The connection borrowed from Freud’s text appears essential to me, once it’s noticed that what’s at play in this extension is the function Lacan wrote as barred A. What’s correlative to the fantasm is, in fact, this putting the Other of knowledge (l’Autre du savoir) to the test, questioning its fl aw. The singular position of the fantasm in the analytic experience sticks to this connection, to the point that we can metaphorize it by writing the formu-la of the fantasm as supported by the barred A. So this is how I write the formula “I know nothing more about it– a child is being beaten (battu):”
